The Laughing Warrior Brigade
Based out of Taylors, South Carolina and frequently traveling to nearby towns and cities, the Laughing Warrior Brigade highlights the necessity of play, joy, and art in political action. With a philosophy of "turning up and upturning," this troupe combines costumes, props, handmade signs, and elaborate performances to comment on contemporary political issues, such as the Coronavirus Pandemic, anti-Black racism, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. I spoke with Ash Macnamara, one of the founding members of the troupe who currently directs many of their performances, about a few of the troupe's recent actions. Comprised entirely of transgender and nonbinary artists and activists, the Laughing Warriors Brigade represents a queer approach to the Appalachian radical tradition.
More information about the Laughing Warrior Brigade and their upcoming actions can be found on the troupe's Facebook page.
