The Wildcrafting Our Queerness Project

Shells and Shrooms

Founded in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Shells and Shrooms is an art, spiritual guidance, and healing collective based out of the foothills of North Carolina. Shells and Shrooms is made up of the artist and spiritual counselor Kat Torres (left) and doula J.M. Grayson (right), who are partners and co-collaborators. Kat Torres' art often centers on digital and mixed-media portraits of mythical nonbinary people and women, blending aspects of magical realism, drag scenes, and their personal relationship to Taino cultures and histories. In addition to their doula work, J.M. Grayson also operates Good Rice Beauty, a self-care line inspired by their Gullah roots that integrates herbal medicines and traditional southern soap-making techniques. In all of their work, Shells and Shrooms construct an understanding of queerness and art that extends beyond a conventional canvas to include the body, the spirit, and personal histories.
