Religion

A common thread throughout some of the art in this project is the focus on numerous forms of religious and mythological belief. Like with the rest of the United States, many Appalachians practice some form of Christianity, often drawing conservative views on gender and sexuality from these beliefs. As such, the investigation and occasional reappropriation of Christian imagery by queer artists can be an act of subversive empowerment. 

Non-Christian religious and mythological beliefs can make their way into this art as well. In the case of contemporary non-Christian beliefs, these works of art can embody the artists' practice of such religions. In the case of mythological beliefs, such as the Greek pantheon or modern superheroes, the emphasis on how myths are constructed and reinforced can reflect the similar mythmaking which characterizes public discourses on Appalachia.
